It starts off as bitumen, then goes to good gravel, average gravel, shocking gravel and then sand for a bit. Hervey Bay is a small and unpretentious town located just under 300kms north of Brisbane. A 4WD track classification system may be the guide you are looking for, similar to the system used down south for the ski runs. Lancelin Sand Dunes are extremely popular for 4WDing. We have also taken some of these walks ourselves, and written comprehensive walk reports about them. Dwellingup is one of my favorite destinations, with a huge number of things to do. Dont be surprised if you encounter a family of emus along the way as they are a regular feature of the local roads. Marion Bay is uniquely Australian, abundant in wildlife and right on the toe of this peninsula, a tiny township 7km from the entrance of Innes National Park. It can be heavily corrugated, and youll cross a couple of well marked out salt lakes, but the views from Cape Peron and Skipjack Point are nothing short of stunning. The popular bay in the state's south-east is named after French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, who, on March 7, 1772, became the first European to encounter Tasmanian Aboriginal people . In summer with the milder tides you shouldnt have any dramas along here as theres plenty of room between the HIGH and LOW watermarks, but winter and spring needs some caution exercised particularly around a full moon on a high tide, as you might find theres no beach to run on and the top track is submerged. Camping is hugely popular here, as its the first place you can get to in the national park with Caravans that is actually reasonably suitable. This is all within about 1/2 hr from Nelson Bay and about the same from Paterson. . The 4WD section starts about 100km east of Esperance, and ends at Israelite Bay, some 200km east of Esperance. Steep Point, Shark Bay. The dust and sun become blinding along the hilly and winding track. The salt lakes at Francois Peron are well marked and easy to get across, The last part of the track to Skipjack Point can be very soft and lumpy, The views from Skipjack Point are phenomenal.
